Therapy: Medicine for Anxiety?

Not sure if you have ever seen “The Soprano’s” or “Billions”. They are both television shows with the main character going to see a therapist. Whether the main character is the head of the mafia or the CEO of a major hedge fund worth billions of dollars, the message is clear, even those without mental health disorders need help. We usually believe as a person without a mental health disorder that there is a stigma associated with seeking help. Get over it! Hollywood has made it clear that no matter how well you are doing in life, there is nothing wrong with psychotherapy.

Recently, I have recommended that some of my buddies who are going through a tough time in their life go seek help. Thankfully, I was able to promote the idea with Tony Soprano (from Soprano’s) and Bobby Axelrod (from Billions) seeking and gaining well-being from seeing someone. The days of psychotherapy being something for everyone is gaining traction. I would sell the visit as a way to say anything to this professional without your thoughts following you into your family or social life. We all know someone who could use an ear but what if that ear was trained to help and not judge? Perfect!

If you have an injury the best place to be is a doctor’s office right? Well in this writer’s opinion, if life is getting in the way of living, I would recommend therapy. The consensus is clear when people finally hurdle the stigma and sign up for a session... Somehow some relief is given even before the session. And wow have people said the same thing after their first session “it was great!” In life they say “don’t knock it until you try it” and I totally agree. If you are going through something that is a burden to deal with, try it. One thing is for sure, if you get a therapist who can connect with you, it is a huge relief. Anxiety comes in all measures and now more than ever can it be treated without medicine. Let’s break the stigma on psychotherapy and not only try it but recommend a great professional to those who might need to unload the burden of words unspoken.
